The current cold snap is increasing the regulated rate for electricity (PVPC, Voluntary Rate for Small Consumers). It has gone up and will continue to go up in the next few days. By contrast, Endesa customers who are on the free market rate will not be affected as they already have a guaranteed fixed and stable price per kWh.
THE RISE ONLY AFFECTS THE REGULATED MARKET
The regulated market has an energy rate that changes every hour depending on supply and demand. Peaks of consumption caused by the cold snap (that has brought low temperatures but neither wind or heavy rain) explain the sudden rises that will affect customers on the PVPC rate.
By contrast, Endesa customers in the free market have a fixed and stable rate. They will continue paying the same per kWh and their rate will not be affected. Their bills will go up if they increase their consumption (quite likely due to the cold snap), but the rate at which they pay for energy will not go up.
YOU ARE FREE TO CHOOSE
Consumers are free to choose which market they want to be in. To find out which market you are in, enter your Customer Area (you will need to login with your username and password). If your contract states PVPC, then you are in the regulated market. Otherwise, you are in the free market.
You can also find out which market you are in by checking your paper bill (or the PDF version that you can download from the Customer Area).
